The Desert Portion of The High Atlas Explorer Trail

Stallions and riders in the desert on the High Atlas Explorer Trail

Some parts of the desert were very open and hot, although the wind got up in the afternoons, driven by the cool air from the distant snow-covered mountains that were our quest.  The desert pavement shown here is rather stony but in other places the stones were smaller and we were able to canter and gallop for miles.

Oil palm oasis

One of our campsites was at an oasis.  As we approached it, we met a nomad herding camels, which made it a classic geography text book scene, just as I had always imagined it. In the evening on this day, there was a perfect desert full moon.

From our first day, we could see the mountains and the cool snow that would have been so welcome in the desert heat.  Later, we were to long for the friendly warmth of the desert.
